"My Space" for Finance Folks

Wow, been a long time since I've posted here. I guess it's a long time coming. So much has happened since my last post. The big topic as of late is the new Microsoft Dynamics Live Finance Community. This was just launched a couple of weeks ago at Microsoft's Convergence conference in San Diego (which was fantastic by the way).

This new community is geared toward people who work in finance roles. Anyone from the CFO to the Accounts Payable clerk. My team was responsible for this launch and we are really excited about it - as are some press and analysts! We did some poking around the internet to see if such a place existed and found that it did not! So what is this all about? Basically it's a place where finance folks can get together, and interact with each other on finance topics. Not being a finance professional by trade, I probably don't have the best examples, but it's a way for people to share best practices, learn from other finance organizations. Maybe someone else does things more efficiently than your organization? Or maybe you are using a specific financial application and you are attempting to do XYZ with it, but don't understand how.

Convergence Comes to Europe

OK, I know I haven't blogged in forever. I guess you could say I've been a bit busy working on Convergence EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Africa). Yep, we've has such great success with the event in the US. We are bringing our annual customer conference to our wonderful customers in Europe. The event is November 6-8 in Munich, Germany.

I'm acting as the Content Owner of the event. And although I'm new to this kind of role, I'm excited to be working with the core team on making this event such as success. Web 2.0 and Community

Good article from Tim O'Reilly on the definition of Web 1.0 and Web 2.0. Web 1.0 meaning the types of web sites that were part of dotcom fallout and Web 2.0 meaning the types of web sites that provide interaction; many community sites and community elements are a large contributor to the web 2.0 era and are provided in this article as examples.

Yes, I know I've been very neglectful of my blog - I guess Convergence just got the best of my time. Now that most everyone is back in the office, I can say with confidence that the Community Lounge at Convergence was a HIT again this year. Check out my pictures of the lounge to see how much fun others had.

Calling all Related Communities

Microsoft Dynamics is changing the process of receiving new related community sites. We used to require you to submit a 2 page web application, which sent you through a long and drawn out process before becoming approved...then you had to wait for your community site to show up on the Microsoft Dynamics community site, etc., etc.! Crazy process, I know, but that is all changing now.

Turns out Microsoft wasn't getting value out of the tool behind the process either, so we are ditching it!

So, if you are the owner (or heavy user) of a good non-Microsoft sponsored community site - please email bizmeet@microsoft.com. Once we receive your request, we will send you an application form to fill out. Then we will review your site to ensure it meets all of the criteria (see criteria below). Upon approval, a link to your community site will be added to our related community landing page. BTW, the landing page was recently updated and sliced out by product so you can find other relevant communities easier!

The Benefits

As a Related Community, your site or service will receive contextually relevant placement (a link and description) on the No. 1 corporate site and fourth largest Web site on the planet (according to Jupiter Media Metrics, 2003).
You will have the opportunity to engage with a Microsoft community Lead (that's me!) A community lead is your personal, direct contact with Microsoft who can help You find answers to difficult questions, learn about upcoming events, and gain more insight into the product life cycle.
You have the opportunity to include the Microsoft® Related Community logo on your community site or service.
Your community site has the potential to be promoted to a Featured Community, receiving elevated exposure across Microsoft Web sites with your community site link and description. This is a great way to bring new traffic to your community site or service.

To Qualify

This program is open to contextually relevant community Web sites that meet all of the following base-level participation guidelines:

Predominantly devoted to peer-to-peer community features. Example: Newsgroups, discussion boards, chats, blogs, etc.
Supports Microsoft Dynamics (or related) products and/or services and technologies
Provides a visible reciprocal link back to the contextually relevant Microsoft community site home page. For example: http://www.microsoft.com/Dynamics/community (for Dynamics general community), or http://www.microsoft.com/dynamics/ax/community.mspx (for product specific, Dynamics AX community)

T-1 Week: Ready for Launch

Can you believe it's almost here? Convergence that is...only 1 week away. People around the office, including myself, are wrapping up our Convergence plans - crossing our T's and dotting our I's. It's been a long planning process, but we are [almost] ready, ready for you, and we hope you are ready too!

My view of the conference is very much focused on our community. Mostly the online community, but certainly with ties to our offline community. Here is a view into all the great community events, activities, and promotions that I have my hands in:

Community Lounge - second annual lounge. For those who attended last year's Convergence (or last 2 Worldwide Partner Conferences) this is one of the most fun places to be while onsite. You can hang in the lounge on the comfy furniture, casually network with other customers, other partners, or other Microsofties. Or enjoy a complimentary Aqua Massage (I personally have never had one, but I'm looking forward to this!). We even scored a couple of Xbox 360s! Could be a great time to get away from the daily grind in the concurrent session and have a friendly Xbox tourney - or how about ping pong? I just hope it doesn't get too out of hand
Usability Research - my team is initiating a series of usability tests and focus groups around our CustomerSource secure customer portal as well as our public Community site. Invites have been sent out and the schedule is filling up fast - I hope that you will be able to participate as we will use the research to build out future online community experiences. If you aren't able to attend one of our scheduled sessions...stop by the Community Lounge as we'd love your unstructured feedback too!
The Round Up's - this is a brand new activity for Convergence. We've heard several times in our event feedback that our attendees are looking for opportunities to network with others 'like' them. We hope we nailed it this year by introducing Industry & Role Round Up. Both events are similar in nature. Both will give you a visual indicator of your industry and role. This indicator will help you to network with others in the same industry/vertical and department/role. We hope that you will wear your visual indicators throughout the conference to continue to find those like you. Industry Round Up is on Saturday after the industry sessions and Role Round Up will be on Sunday during the lunch hour.
Convergencebloggers.net - also new this year, we've created an aggregated blogging site for people who are interested in Convergence. No matter if you are attending or had to stay back at the office and keep watch over the flock...this is a great place to learn about what's going on at Convergence. I'll be posting my thoughts and views on this blog throughout the week of the conference. The Convergencebloggers.net site is an aggregated view of blog posts from the registered bloggers. Register your blog or start a new one just for the event! It's really easy and fun to read what others are thinking about. If you've attended TechEd or PDC, you've likely seen these aggregated blogger sites that are just like this one. It's a great way to keep in touch.
Community Site Refresh - in preparation for the conference you'll be seeing a new face for the public Microsoft Dynamics Community site. We'll also be introducing a couple of new community features that you'll want to be sure to check out. You'll be able to learn more about (and more from) our Most Valuable Professionals (MVPs) plus check out some collaborative videos we did with the Channel 9 team. The new site will launch late next week! Doug may even talk about it in his keynote...guess you'll have to wait and see

Have you heard about Microsoft Dynamics Snap?

I too am just getting up to speed on the new Microsoft Dynamics Snap initiative. In reading through the press release and checking out the Snap sandbox and all of the feedback and comments - these collections of software programs for Microsoft Dynamics are really awesome. Already partners and ISVs are exctied about it because of the potential it is and will continue to provide for Dynamics customers.

Nadella: Microsoft Dynamics Snap is a collection of products for Microsoft Office 2003 users to work with certain Microsoft Dynamics applications and is another example of our strategy to deliver business management solutions that fits with our customer’s existing systems. It is a set of four programs that “snap in” to Office 2003, making it easier for users to use Microsoft Office Outlook calendar data as part of a business process managed by certain Microsoft Dynamics solutions, or to easily pull business data managed by certain Microsoft Dynamics solutions and use it as part of a collaboration, email, or document managed by Microsoft Office 2003.

We have articulated a vision for Microsoft Dynamics (the new name for the research and development roadmap formerly code-named "Project Green") that involves two waves of releases. One of the key goals of the first wave is to deliver a user experience that is deeply integrated with Microsoft Office by using a roles-based approach. Today’s announcement of Microsoft Dynamics Snap offers evidence of the progress we are making against that goal.

R U Ready?

Wow - only 3 weeks until the big event. It's been quite busy around here prepping. Convergence is Microsoft's biggest customer event and I'm helping out with many of the community elements on site. I've been doing the planning for the Community Lounge (2nd annual). The lounge will be a hot spot at the event again - a place for you to veg out while onsite or learn about our community programs - including newsgroups, Most Valuable Professional Program (MVP), user groups, and other related communities.

Additionally I'm making sure our Online Community site has a new 'dress' for the occasion. It's been a little stale lately, but that will change very soon!

Hey - have you signed up for Convergencebloggers.net? This is a new thing we are doing this year for Convergence to help folks interested in Convergence connect and network together. Who knows, your blog entry or photo might even be the top news item one day!

If you are a Convergence newbie, hold on! The event team is going to be posting a Convergence 101 video soon. I got a sneak peak of one of the first drafts on a short visit to Fargo this week and it's pretty cool.
